An Artist’s Statement, or something

Hello friend, and thanks for taking the time to swing by here. I wanted to write a little bit about myself, so you know just who is making the pretty pictures you’ve been looking at. It makes me laugh a little, the idea that a few paragraphs could ever cover who someone is, but I’ll give it a go.

So let’s see here… well, I was born in Los Angeles in the Spring of 1979, and although part of me has always liked to share that fact, the truth is that I have zero memories of the place and after subsequent visits back I realize that I’m very thankful to have left.

After a few early years living in Salt Lake City, my folks moved us up to Spokane, Washington in the winter of 88-89 and I’ve dwelled here ever since.

I didn’t find photography until I was 36, and really, it found me - but that’s a story for another time. Before that I had more jobs than any sane man would admit to. From grocery stores to fast food spots, music stores to freight companies, pizza joints, construction work, thermoplastics, I even spent nearly a decade manufacturing sterile injectables for a pharmaceutical company.

Since picking up the camera, I’ve dabbled in just about every avenue of photography you could imagine trying to find my own vision. I tried family photos and weddings (never again), senior portraits, product photography and real estate photos (something I still do for select clients). What I’ve discovered, as I’ve grown into my perception is that I’m only truly successful in executing at the highest level when I’m staying true to my vision. I’ve never been great at adopting someone else’s and trying to make it work. Client portrait work has just never been my bag, and I sometimes envy the ones out there who can do that stuff. Sure, it brings income, but it also brings a lot of baggage that drains a man until he’d rather deliver whiskey and toilet paper than make another corporate headshot.

I’m 46 now, ten years into my pursuit of the mastery of this art and I felt it was time to put a website together more as a way to get my work in front of people than anything else. I’m not trying to “attract clients” or anything like that. No, I wanted a way to display my work in the way I choose, free from the shackles of the social media algorithms.

I do have a shop here on the site, wherein you can find limited edition prints of some of my finest images and maybe something will speak to you such that you find that you must own one, and if that happens, well, I thank you very much. Ultimately, I just hope you enjoy the work, and maybe some of the words as well.

So I hope you’ll take the time to peruse my galleries, and please, don’t rush. Treat each image as if it were hanging on the wall in front of you, and you’ve got a glass of wine, water or whatever, and maybe you’re standing there with someone else, and you’re talking about how it makes you feel, and you might even ask “what does this mean?” That is, after all, what art is about.

Well look at that, I didn’t even swear one time.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by and sticking with me as I wander down the path. I know there’s all sorts of flashing lights and noisy sounds competing for your time and attention these days and I appreciate you giving me some of that attention. I hope you come back around now and then because you never can tell when a new story is about to be told.

While it’s true that I no longer offer standard portrait sittings or client work, I am always open to hearing ideas about potential work that aligns with my vision. Please feel free to reach out with the form below or on my Instagram page via the link.
